CD44is the receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA). It mediates cell to cell and cellmatrix interactions through its affinity for HA. Adhesion with HA plays animportant role in cell migration, tumor growth and progression. Also involvedin lymphocyte activation, recirculation and homing, and in hematopoiesis. Highprotein heterogeneity due to several alternative splicing and posttranslational modification events. CD44Rrepresents a heterogeneous group ofCD44 variant isoforms expressed constitutively in epithelial cells and monocyineage cells and can be upregulated in activatedleukocytes. CD44R, and in particularCD44v6 containing isoforms, may be involved in leukocyte attachment to androlling on endothelial cells, homing to peripheral lymphoid organs and to sitesof inflammation. CD44v6 containing isoforms may be involved in tumormetastasis.

Theprotein encoded by this gene is a cell-surface glycoprotein involved incell-cell interactions, cell adhesion and migration. It is a receptor forhyaluronic acid (HA) and can also interact with other ligands, such asosteopontin, collagens, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). This proteinparticipates in a wide variety of cellular functions including lymphocyteactivation, recirculation and homing,hematopoiesis, and tumor metastasis.Transcripts for this gene undergo complex alternative splicing that results inmany functionally distinct isoforms, however, the full length nature of some ofthese variants has not been determined. Alternative splicing is the basis forthe structural and functional diversity of this protein, and may be related totumor metastasis.
